DR. URSULA HIEKE



Art historian with doctorate. After a career in auctioneering, opened Kunsthandel Hieke in 1980 with a focus on Classical Modernism. Not only renowned Austrian artists, but also lesser known and undeservedly forgotten artists between 1900 and 1970 were reclaimed for the history of art and presented to the public in exhibitions.

Rudolf R. Ballabene, Hanns Diehl-Wallendorf, Helene Funke, Ferdinand K. Gold, Alfred Hagel, Richard Harlfinger, Max Kahrer, Jakob Koganowsky Broncia Koller-Pinell, Peter Pálffy, Anton Peschka, Rudolf Pühringer, Karl Schade, Theobald Schmögner, Heinrich Schröder, Gustav Schütt, Lydia von Spallart, Anton Storch-Alberti, André Verlon, Trude Waehner, Rudolf von Zeileissen and many others found delayed recognition by the public in Kunsthandel Hieke. Many of them have since become fixed stars of Austrian painting, while museums have also belatedly included and honored them.

After working in the cultural scene from the Metropolitan Opera New York, Wiener Festwochen and Sotheby's, London,


Her first big rediscovery, true to the gallery's motto, was the workup of the estate of Carl Krall in 2015, which was followed by the rediscovery of André Verlon for his 100th birthday in 2016.


Besides the traditional gallery work, Marie-Valerie Hieke is also in charge of the publication process, research, graphic design, and the online presence of Hieke Fine Art.

A specialist for Austrian painting from 1900-1970 since 1980 and known for discoveries from this period, including artists from the turn of the century, Secessionism, Atmospheric Painting, Expressionism, Art Deco, New Objectivity and Abstract Painting.

Quality, exact art-historic reworking and appropriate restoration are extremely important to me. Conserving the original frame or providing a suitable new frame are also part of my service. Just as important are our cooperations with Austrian museums in the area of research and for exhibitions.

Every work of art that I offer is genuine. This is confirmed on acquisition with photographic evidence and a written certificate of authenticity. In order to ensure that the paintings are not lost or stolen, I cooperate closely with and attach great importance to inspection of the art loss register. If you no longer wish to own the acquired work of art after a few years, I would like to ask you to offer it to me to arrange a swap or buy-back.
